Afghanistan’s interim government has promised to restore the bas-relief depicting Alisher Navoi in Mazar-i-Sharif, Akhror Burkhanov, spokesman for Uzbekistan’s Foreign Minister, said on February 16.
The spokesperson emphasized that the department “we are saddened by the news of the damage to the bas-relief and graffiti of the great poet Alisher Navoi in Afghanistan” and contacted the Afghan side.
In response, Afghan diplomats stated that “This act of vandalism in no way reflects the policy of the interim government, which advocates strengthening centuries-old friendly relations with brotherly Uzbekistan.”adding that this incident “It is an unauthorized and thoughtless action by unknown persons and damages our common historical and cultural heritage”.
The Uzbekistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs believes that the Afghan authorities will take all possible measures to restore the monument, as well as ensure respect for the common cultural heritage.
Recall that on February 7, in Mazar-i-Sharif, at the Mukhabarat junction, a monument to the great Turkish Sufi poet, Timurid Khorasan statesman Alisher Navoi was destroyed. In place of the bas-relief with the image of him, a smooth wall appeared.
Later, information appeared in the media that the Mazar-i-Sharif bas-relief was dismantled during the campaign to demolish monuments and statues of living beings.
