Representatives of the Hindu minority demanded security and justice in mass demonstrations in major cities of Bangladesh, The Times of India reports on August 11.
According to the paper, the Hindu minorities, who gathered for a second consecutive day for a demonstration at Shahbagh junction in the capital Dhaka, demanded security for Hindus, their homes, temples and businesses, arrest of those who committed acts of violence against them and compensation for vandalism, theft and torture.
“August 2024: Save Hindus of Bangladesh. We want justice and security,” read one placard held by a young woman. Others chanted slogans such as “Why are they ransacking my temples and houses? We want answers,” “Religion is for individuals, the state is for all,” and “Keep Hindus safe.”
Thousands of protesters in other major cities like Chattogram, Barisal, Tangail and Kurigram said Hindus have the right to live in Bangladesh.
Ethnic and religious minorities in Bangladesh have suffered at least 205 attacks in 52 districts since the government led by Sheikh Hasina was ousted from power on August 5, according to two Hindu organisations, the Bangladesh Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council and the Bangladesh Puja Parishad of Ujapan. Thousands of Bangladeshi Hindus are trying to flee to neighbouring India to escape the violence.
