German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Sunday called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “break the spiral of retaliation,” arguing that a ceasefire in Gaza would be a “decisive step” toward de-escalating tensions in the Middle East.
A statement from Scholz’s spokesman Wolfgang Buchner said that in a telephone conversation with the Israeli leader, the German prime minister “stressed that the time had come to finalise the hostage-release and ceasefire agreement” and insisted that “ending the war in Gaza would be a decisive step towards de-escalation in the region.”
“Now more than ever, it is important to break the spiral of retaliatory violence, reduce tensions and work constructively towards de-escalation,” Scholz said, according to the statement.
