Oxford academics have warned students that these papers may contain “racist and misogynistic views” and they should seek support if they have any concerns while studying them.
A note to the content of one of the modules of the university’s English Literature course states the following: “Medieval literature often describes extreme physical, emotional and psychological states” and “Graphic representations of violence”.
In addition to the warning about medieval writings, students of English literature also received a general warning about the material they will read, which states that they may be exposed to “preconceived notions or language” AND “A Graphic Representation of Inequality and Violence”.
The message also says: “As a faculty, we believe that one of the important roles of the study of the humanities is to explore and overcome shocking or embarrassing ideas, and to understand their origin, manifestation, and impact.”
