Back in the I League elite, Santa Clara inflicted a humiliating 1-4 defeat on Estoril on their trip to the continent. Jan Catro’s team started better but suffered a second-half setback.
The Canaries were looking for an early goal and were always closer to the opponent’s goal. Marquez continued the team play of Zanoselo and Begraoui and made his debut by scoring a goal. Vinicius Lopez, in a moment of inspiration, equalized the score at the end of the first half.
In the second half, all hell broke loose for Estoril, and the islanders rose to the occasion. Safira’s penalty gave Santa Clara the lead. Ricardinho and João Costa came off the bench to seal the first win for Vasco Matos’s side.
