A fire engulfed an empty building on the steps of São Cristóvão in Lisbon on Sunday evening, suspected to have been started by homeless people using the space as a refuge.
The alarm was raised at 11:30 p.m. and prompted the evacuation of seven residents from nearby buildings in an operation that mobilized 31 Zapadores Regiment fighters supported by nine vehicles. Despite the panic, everyone was able to return to their homes at 3 a.m. without any injuries.
Due to the “imminent risk of collapse” of the remaining structure, Lisbon City Council carried out relief work on the empty building on Monday.
The judicial police are investigating the fire.
