The United States announced on Monday that it was sending a nuclear submarine to the Middle East and ordered a naval task force led by the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln to speed up its progress to the area amid concerns that an Iranian attack on Israel may be imminent.
The boost in resources was announced by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin after a phone call with his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant, who said Israel had indications Iran was preparing a large-scale attack “in the coming days.”
In addition to speeding up the arrival of the USS Abraham Lincoln, an aircraft carrier equipped with advanced F-35 fighter jets, Austin also decided to send the USS Georgia, a nuclear-powered submarine armed with guided missiles, as a clear warning to Iran. Washington already sent additional ships and aircraft to the region last month to help protect Israel from an Iranian attack.
