The Venezuelan government has accused UN experts present in the country to supervise the presidential election of spreading a “series of lies”, saying electoral authorities lacked transparency in managing the results.
In a report, UN experts sent to Venezuela concluded that “basic measures of transparency and fairness” necessary for “credible elections” were not met.
The group of experts violated the “terms of reference signed with the electoral authority” by publishing a preliminary report – contrary to what was planned – while preparing a final version for UN Secretary-General António Guterres, which will not be made public, Caracas responded in a statement.
