Scotland’s Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon John Swinney has refused to fight for a leadership position on Home Rule, Sky News reports on February 17.
The Scottish Parliament must meet and decide on the candidates for the post of Prime Minister after the resignation of Nicola Sturgeon, which occurred on February 15. To survive, candidates must have the support of at least 100 party members from at least 20 local party branches. Unlike Westminster, where the First Minister is appointed by the King in accordance with royal prerogative, the First Minister of Scotland is nominated for appointment by members of the Scottish Parliament (MSP).
There are currently four candidates:
keith brown is the current deputy leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP), who has held this position since 2018. He has been a Member of Parliament since 2007 and has represented the Clackmannanshire and Dunblane constituency since 2011. He has a long ministerial career and has worked in a variety of areas including schools and skills, transportation and infrastructure, and economics. He appointed Minister for Justice and Veterans in 2021. Born in Edinburgh and veteran of the Falklands War, ex-marine.
keith forbes is the Secretary for Economy and Finance of the SNP and has held this position since February 2020. Forbes is from the Highlands but spent several years of his childhood in India. She was first chosen for Holyrood in 2016 for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch. Borbs told the New Statesman last year that she had “an unusual backstory, a world that is very different from the world of my peers.” He is a member of the Evangelical Free Church of Scotland, which opposes gay marriage and abortion. Forbes, 32, is currently on maternity leave after giving birth to her first child in August.
angus robertson currently Minister for Constitution, Culture and Foreign Affairs, but has had a long career in the SNP, beginning with party leadership Alex Salmond. He was the SNP leader in Parliament for 10 years, from 2007 to 2017. Robertson, 53, was also elected SNP vice-chairman by party members in 2016, a post he held for two years. He lost his Westminster seat to incumbent Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross in 2017.
Humza Yusuf he was elected MP for Glasgow in 2011. At 26, he was the youngest MP ever elected for Holyrood at the time. He is now 37 years old and has been Minister of Health and Social Protection since 2021. Previously, he served as Minister of Justice from 2018 to 2021 and also held junior ministerial positions in the fields of Foreign Affairs and International Development, Europe and Transport. Yousaf is the non-white Muslim first minister in the Scottish government.
