Sud Ouest: Macron decides to abolish the Council for Islamic Affairs in France

Sud Ouest: Macron decides to abolish the Council for Islamic Affairs in France

France has decided to abolish the French Council for the Muslim Faith (CFCM), writes the French newspaper Sud Ouest on February 16.

CFCM was created in France in 2003. It was supposed to serve as a dialogue between the state and representatives of the Muslim faith. The Council was made up of federations of Muslims residing in the country, historically associated with their countries of origin (Morocco, Algeria, Turkey, etc.).

In recent years, the Council has been faced with serious internal problems. This led the Executive to decide in December 2021 to stop considering him as an interlocutor and prefer him to the Forum of Islam in France (Forif), a body made up of representatives of the Muslim communities designated locally by the prefects. On February 16, French President Emmanuel Macron, host to Forif members, announced that he had decided to stop CFCM’s work entirely.

“The old body had its limitations. Although there was a dialogue and a real breakthrough. Therefore, what has been done should not be underestimated. But today we have decided to cease the existence of CFCM and its activities”.Macron said.

Council representatives, for their part, said that CFCM itself will not be dissolved. For this, the Governing Board will meet, which will finally decide what will happen next. Either it will be dissolved, but it will be a “democratic process” or, perhaps, it will simply change its name, as the co-chairman of the Council, Ibrahim Alchi, stressed.
