The Interior Minister has launched an investigation to identify security forces members linked to Group 1143, an extremist group led by Mario Machado.
This is the second time that Margarida Blasco has announced a general investigation into police officers after in 2022, when she was inspector general of the internal administration, she initiated an investigation into almost 600 police officers for racist remarks on social media. Now at stake is the connection of agents and soldiers with the ultra-nationalist group 1143, which defends white supremacy. Margarida Blasco ordered the investigation to determine disciplinary responsibility, ensuring that this is extremely serious behavior in a democratic rule of law and is prohibited by the Constitution.
At the end of last year, IGAI was conducting 13 investigations into discrimination in the security forces. In 2023, a PSP agent was sentenced to 45 days of disqualification for criticizing the entry of a representative of Roma ethnicity into the GNR, but the sentence was suspended for a year.
