All-Russian sports competitions in fencing among men were held in Moscow, the press service of the Russian Fencing Federation reported.
116 shooters participated in the tournament. Among them were three of the four members of the Russian Olympic team that won silver medals at the Tokyo Olympics: Sergei Bida, Pavel Sukhov and Nikita Glazkov. Seven pentathletes were also allowed to fight for medals, for whom fencing is one of the five modalities of the program.
After group matches, and then single-elimination matches, four gold contenders were determined. Sergey Bida and Artem Sargsyan met in the first semifinal. Unexpectedly, Sargsyan won with a huge margin – 15:9. In the second semifinal, Alexey Udovichenko beat Georgy Bruev 15:10.
In the final, Udovichenko turned out to be stronger, winning 15:11. Two weeks ago, Alexey won the championship of Russia among juniors, and now he won the first gold in his career at all-Russian competitions in the “adult” category. Bida and Bruev shared third place. Olympic medalists Sukhov and Glazkov took only 17th and 18th places, respectively.
