An earthquake of magnitude 3.5 was felt on Friday on the island of S. Jorge, the Azores Center for Seismovolcanic Information and Monitoring (CIVISA) reported.
The earthquake, with its epicenter approximately 16 kilometers from Luz, on the island of Graciosa, occurred at 00:26 (01:46 in Lisbon) and “was felt with a maximum intensity of III/IV (Modified Mercalli Scale) in Rosais, Norte Grande (municipality of Velas, island of S. Jorge) and in Calheta (municipality of Calheta, island of S. Jorge),” CIVISA said in a statement.
The Richter scale classifies earthquakes by magnitude as micro (less than 2.0), very small (2.0-2.9), small (3.0-3.9), weak (4.0-4.9), moderate (5.0-5.9), strong (6.0-6.9), major (7.0-7.9), important (8.0-8.9), exceptional (9.0-9.9), and extreme (when above 10).
