Giorgi Gakharia, leaving the post of Prime Minister of Georgia two years ago, did so because he considered the situation in the country. “dead end”This was stated on February 17, on the anniversary of his resignation, in a briefing.
According to him, he convinced his associates in the Georgian Dream party that the course they had taken was contrary to Euro-Atlantic integration, but they would not listen to him.
“At that time I could not convince Mechta that we would part with democratic values and the West, as it turned out today, that was his goal,” Gakharia said.
He stated that after his departure, the situation in Georgia worsened and the country “go back to the past”. The former prime minister also believes that there are no institutions in the republic that do not depend on the ruling party. Gakharia also stated that he was responsible for helping to strengthen the current government.
It is worth noting that the liberal opposition parties in Georgia have been criticizing Mechta for about a year for refusing to sever economic ties with Russia. The ruling party is called “Russian Dream”, they say that it supposedly leads the country to the USSR.
Recall that Gakharia resigned at the height of the conflict between the authorities and the largest opposition party, the United National Movement (UNM). He stated that he did not agree with the decision to arrest the UNM president, Nika Melia, for violating the preventive measures taken against him by the court.
After leaving, Gakharia founded his own party “For Georgia”, to which he attracted six Georgian Dream MPs, as well as several politicians at the regional level.
