Political activist of the Movement for a Democratic Alternative (Madem G-15) Keba Sané, known as R. Kelly, detained in Guinea-Bissau since Tuesday, was released this Friday by the Bissau police, family sources told Lusa.
“He has been released and is at home,” a family source said, without giving details of the circumstances of the decision by the Public Order Police (POP), which detained him on Tuesday at the Oswaldo Vieira International Airport in Bissau.
Keba Sané was at the airport with a group of Madem activists, awaiting the arrival of party leader Braima Camara, who had flown in from Lisbon.
The Guinean League for Human Rights said in a statement on Thursday that the activist had been tortured.
This is the third time that R. Kelly, a Madem activist who is a regular on social media, has been detained in connection with political protests.
Police dispersed Madem activists and journalists as they headed to the airport to await Braima Camara’s arrival in the country after a four-month absence from Portugal.
A Home Office source told Lusa that R. Kelly refused to “obey orders given” when he allegedly tried to gain access to the airport’s arrivals areas.
