The Judicial Police are investigating the causes of a fire that broke out on Friday afternoon in the Prior Velho industrial area and destroyed another 200 vehicles. The clean-up operations ended at 2am today.
Speaking to Lusa, the commander of the Greater Lisbon Civil Protection Subregion, Hugo Santos, said that “the judicial police have already arrived on the scene.”
A fire engulfed a car park near Lisbon airport owned by a company that collected cars from passengers who were travelling by plane at the time.
The fire, which caused no personal damage and did not spread to nearby warehouses, was alerted by phone at 5.58pm on Friday, with the blaze declared out by 10.50pm and clean-up efforts continuing until about 2am.
According to Hugo Santos, one of the two floors of the parking lot was damaged, while no damage was recorded on the floor where the UPS logistics company worked: “The parking lot was covered on floor No. 1 and open on floor No. 2. And only floor No. 2 was on fire. The UPS was on the first floor,” he explained.
“Ultimately, some vehicles that were not burned but could have been damaged by the heat generated by the fire may be damaged,” he said.
