In less than 10 years, PSP has received nearly 3,000 complaints related to pet abandonment and identified more than 1,200 suspects in the same crime on International Abandoned Animal Day.
In a statement about the Animal Welfare Programme, created in 2015 and dedicated to animal welfare, primarily in relation to animal abandonment and cruelty, the PSP states that since that date, 20 arrests have been made related to this crime.
Since 2015, it has received more than 2,900 complaints and identified more than 1,200 suspects.
The year with the highest number of complaints – almost 400 – was 2017. This year, as of August 13, 125 complaints were registered and 61 suspects were identified.
The National PSP Directorate reports that the reporting of abandonment cases similar to abuse situations is carried out not only by the various Environmental Protection Teams (BriPA) attached to the various metropolitan, district and regional commands, which are responsible for monitoring and responding to these types of complaints, but also through the police, which carries out normal operational activities on a daily basis and regularly encounters situations of this type.
PSP takes this opportunity to recall the existence of the Animal Protection Line and reports that the most common complaints received through this helpline are dogs barking on the balcony, dirty patio/public area with an unpleasant smell, animals trapped without water and/or food, dogs walking without a leash, aggressive animals, and animals being cruelly attacked as a method of training.
The Animal Protection Hotline is now managed by the National Directorate of the PSP at the email address [email protected].
PSP ensures that this mailbox is monitored 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and complaints are received at a national level.
After this, an investigation is carried out and complaints are forwarded to the command of the responsible territorial district or to the authorities competent to resolve the situation, depending on each case, with the complainant/reporter notified of this direction.
In terms of BriPA’s work to monitor pet owners, over the past four years more than 10,222 actions have been carried out, resulting in 5,266 violations being verified.
