The FIFA Foundation will donate one million dollars (€940,000 at current exchange rates) to help those affected by the earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria, world football’s governing body announced this Friday.
“The FIFA Foundation will donate $1 million for emergency humanitarian assistance in the wake of the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria that have killed more than 42,000 people and left many more homeless in very low temperatures,” FIFA said.
The money will be used to “purchase and distribute essential goods, as well as provide shelter and temporary protection” to victims of the earthquakes that hit the two countries on February 6.
FIFA’s decision, which said it could monitor the situation and assess the adoption of new support measures, came after contacts with the Turkish and Syrian football federations, as well as with local and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
According to the latest data, two earthquakes measuring 7.8 and 7.5 on the Richter scale killed 36,187 people and injured 108,000 in Turkey. About 5,000 people have died in Syria.
The area affected by the two February 6 earthquakes, centered in Turkey, spans more than 100,000 square kilometers and is home to 14 million people.
