The United Nations (UN) on Monday condemned violence against humanitarian workers, 280 of whom have been killed worldwide in 2023, a record set by the war in Gaza that could be broken this year.
“The normalization of violence against humanitarian workers and the lack of accountability is unacceptable, unacceptable and extremely dangerous for humanitarian operations worldwide,” said Joyce Msuya, acting head of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), in a press release on World Humanitarian Day.
“With 280 humanitarian workers killed in 33 countries last year, 2023 is set to be the deadliest year on record for the international humanitarian community,” with a 137% increase over 2022 (118 deaths), OCHA said in a statement based on data from the Humanitarian Worker Safety Database.
