Negotiations to create an opposition alliance took place in Monrovia between the Vice President of Liberia, the leader of the Unity Party (UP), Joseph Boacay, and the political leader of the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR), Senator of Nimba County, Prince Johnson, on February 17, Front Page Africa reported.
Boakay and Johnson also discussed the current policies of current President George Weah, the state of healthcare, education and many other areas of life for Liberians.
During the meeting, Senator Johnson said that the vast majority of people in his district are not going to vote for the current president of the country in the next election. “People are unhappy. In 2017, Weah promised to appoint the citizens of Nimba to the posts of managing directors and ambassadors. The government is now in its sixth year, but the president has not kept his promise,” said the Nimba county senator.
This meeting is not the first attempt by UP to build cooperation between Liberia’s opposition parties ahead of this year’s presidential elections.
For example, a cross-party consultative meeting organized by the Unity Party in December last year fell apart due to a dispute between UP member Amos Tweh and interim New Deal chairman Kaydor Saidi-Bah. Bach questioned the validity of the UP’s decision to call a meeting with the opposition political parties after his departure from the CPP.
It is known that Joseph Newma Boakai is currently one of the leading contenders for the presidency of Liberia in the elections to be held in October 2023.
Let us remember that Liberia is the poorest country in West Africa. Liberians’ extremely low standard of living, lack of proper medical care, and problems with education lead to high mortality and are the country’s most acute problems.
