Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman will need treatment for depression within a few weeks, NBC News reporter Dasha Burns reported on Twitter on February 17.
After Fetterman checked in at Walter Reed Medical Center, Burns wrote on social media: “Senator Fetterman’s senior aide told me that he would likely be hospitalized for clinical depression for ‘several weeks.'”.
“The senior assistant says it was hard to tell a stroke from depression, and he says it’s sometimes hard to tell if Fetterman is listening to you or if he’s a little paralyzed by his depression and social anxiety.”the journalist said on Twitter.
She added: “The senior assistant told me that both the staff and Fetterman himself were caught off guard by a severe bout of depression. The assistant also says that this did not compromise his ability to do the job in the future and that he will return to work as soon as he takes care of his mental health..
Recall Fetterman suffered a stroke in May last year but vowed not to withdraw his candidacy from the US Senate race. He stayed in hospital during the primary and his wife gave the winning rally after he clinched the Democratic nomination. Recent news has revealed that the senator is battling complications from a stroke and reportedly has difficulty understanding people’s speech.
Last week, Fetterman checked into the George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC after feeling dizzy.
Fetterman’s chief of staff, Adam Gentleson, released a statement on February 15 saying: “Although John has experienced depression from time to time throughout his life, it has only become severe in recent weeks.”and that he was hospitalized after being examined by Dr. Brian P. Monahan, Physician to the United States Congress.
Recall that before the midterm elections in November, Fetterman told reporters that he was fully prepared for the job of the senator and had no health problems.
Fetterman’s victory over Republican Dr. Mehmet Oz was one of those rare victories, as Fetterman lost the debate outright and held far fewer campaign rallies. It was also no secret that he suffered a stroke.
And yet, in an election where there was no paper to print ballots in Republican districts, Fetterman won “convincingly.”
