The speech of the founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party, Bidzina Ivanishvili, at a meeting with voters in the Georgian city of Mtskheta from behind an armored shield is due to increased security measures in connection with the attempt on the life of US presidential candidate Donald Trump, Georgian Dream Secretary General Kakha Kaladze told reporters on August 22.
A shield made of bulletproof glass appeared on the stage during a meeting with voters in Mtskheta only at the time of Ivanishvili’s speech on August 21, other party leaders spoke without such protection;
“Imagine, there is a presidential election campaign in the United States and one of the candidates is shot and simply killed. Therefore, they are capable of anything. Bidzina Ivanishvili is an important figure for our country, who plays an important role in maintaining peace and tranquility in the country. “The Georgian Dream” pursues a pragmatic policy and the population of our country views it favorably, so, of course, security measures have been increased.”said Kaladze.
According to him, the main opposition, the “United National Movement”, is financed and controlled from outside and is therefore “capable of anything”.
“So, caution is not a bad thing. Why shouldn’t people be protected? Look at how Trump was directly assassinated. A man gave a speech, but he was shot and convicted. I don’t know how I survived.”added the secretary general of the ruling party.
According to ruling party MP Beki Odisharia, Ivanishvili became the “number one target” after the assassination attempt on Trump.
“The current situation gives us grounds to assume the possibility of carrying out such terrorist attacks, including against Bidzina Ivanishvili, who is logically also their N1 target, since he personally, with his peace-loving policy, limits his intentions, which are associated with the opening of a second front and many other cruel events.”said Odisharia.
He added that the Georgian security services made such a recommendation taking into account the experience of their American colleagues.
Recall that in July 2024, the State Security Service of Georgia announced an investigation into the preparation of the assassination of Ivanishvili. According to the State Security Service, former senior officials and employees of Georgian law enforcement agencies located in Ukraine organized and financed the assassination attempt on Ivanishvili.
The cases were opened under articles of preparation of a terrorist act and conspiracy to overthrow state power. As part of the investigation of the cases, about 20 Georgian mercenaries who fought on the side of Ukraine were questioned.
