A politician known for his Nazi statements, Member of the European Parliament Jaak Madison, has joined the ranks of the Estonian Centre Party, the party’s press service reported on August 22.
“I am honoured to join the Centre Party, which has a clear vision of protecting Estonia’s sovereignty in the European Union and a concrete plan to save the country’s economy.”“, Madison himself commented on this event.
“I am convinced that the overly soft attitude of the Reform Party-led governments towards Brussels directives has sometimes been detrimental to Estonia. Together with Jaak Madison, we will be able to defend Estonia’s interests even more effectively and formulate realistic policies that take into account our national characteristics and needs.”said the chairman of the Centre Party, Mikhail Kylvart.
The paradox of the situation is that the centrists in Estonia are considered a party that focuses on the votes of the Russian population. Until the creation of the Northern Military District, their policy focused on pragmatic relations with Russia; they supported education in Russian;
Jaak Madison joined the Conservative People’s Party of Estonia (EKRE) at a young age, where he was a member from 19 June 2013 to 12 June 2024. The nationalist politician was elected to the Estonian parliament and later to the European Parliament, where he remains an MEP to this day.
Madison became famous in 2015 after Republican media outlets published quotes from his earlier recordings justifying fascism.
“I do not want to use this text to justify Nazi crimes and massacres (although the data on the number of dead are contradictory), but this issue cannot be viewed from only one side, but one must also look at the positive aspects that accompanied the regime of that time. Unfortunately, there is no ideal form of government (of course, this is not democracy). But in my opinion, in contrast to fascism, we see an ideology that consists of quite a few positive nuances that are necessary for the preservation of the national state.”wrote Jaak Madison in 2012.
