‘Trump is not a serious person’: Kamala Harris warns of consequences of opponent’s return to the White House

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris warned of the dangers of Donald Trump’s return to power in the United States during her acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

“In many ways, Donald Trump is not a serious person,” the Democrat said on Thursday (dawn this Friday in Lisbon). “However, the consequences of Donald Trump’s return to the White House are extremely serious,” he warned.

“Consider not just the chaos and the disaster when he was in office, but the gravity of what has happened since he lost the last election,” Harris urged, recalling the storming of the Capitol that resulted in several deaths, including police officers.

Kamala Harris accepted the Democratic presidential nomination on Friday and promised to be a “president for all Americans” during a historic speech in which she became the first African-American woman of Indian descent to be nominated.

“I know there are people watching tonight from all political backgrounds,” Kamala Harris said as she closed the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. “And I want you to know this: I promise to be a president for all Americans,” she said.

“I will be a president who unites us around our highest aspirations,” she continued. “A president who leads and listens. Who is realistic, practical and has common sense,” he promised. “And who always fights for the American people, from the courtroom to the White House. That has been my life’s work.”

Trump’s opponent has laid out an economic and social plan if elected, including tax cuts for the middle class and restoring abortion rights.

“I will create an economy of opportunity where everyone has a chance to compete and succeed, whether they live in a small village or a big city,” the candidate said Thursday night in her closing speech at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

“We will pass tax cuts for the middle class that will benefit 100 million Americans,” he promised, adding that his economic plan includes access to financing programs for small businesses and entrepreneurs.

The incoming Harris administration will also try to unite unions and companies to improve wages and working conditions and even lower the cost of everyday products.

“We will end the housing shortage in America,” he said, also promising to protect Social Security and Medicare benefits.

On the health and social policy level, Harris has focused on restoring reproductive rights after the Supreme Court struck down federal abortion rights, as well as protecting other threatened rights such as access to contraception and in vitro fertilization.

The Democrat warned that the Republican nominee, former President Donald Trump, responsible for appointing the judges who struck down the law guaranteeing access to abortion, is still not satisfied.

“As part of his program, he and his allies will restrict access to contraception, ban abortion drugs and impose a national ban on abortion,” he warned, referring to the plan described in Project 2025 to create a National Abortion Coordinator to register abortions, including spontaneous ones.

“They’re crazy,” Harris said. “Why don’t they trust women?” he asked. “We trust women. When Congress passes the Reproductive Freedom Restoration Act, I will be proud to pass it as president,” he said.

Harris also promised to pass legislation expanding voting rights and addressed border security, one of the administration’s weakest areas due to the significant increase in immigration (legal and illegal).

The candidate spoke about a border security package agreed upon between Democrats and Republicans that was not approved because Trump asked members of Congress, led by Mike Johnson, to reject it, believing it would be bad for his campaign.

“As president, I will take back the bipartisan legislation that Donald Trump killed and pass it,” Harris said. “We can honor our heritage as a nation of immigrants and reform our broken immigration system,” he said. “Open a path to citizenship and secure the border,” he added.

In her speech, Kamala also promised to defend Israel and Ukraine, support NATO allies and members, and ensure that the United States has the greatest military power in the world, in the closing speech of the Democratic National Convention.

In one of the most anticipated moments of Thursday’s speech, in the face of protests around the convention from pro-Palestinian groups, Harris left no room for doubt about her support for Israel but also defended Palestinian rights.

“When it comes to the war in Gaza, President Biden and I are working nonstop because now is the time to reach an agreement on the release of hostages and a ceasefire,” the Democratic candidate said.
