From this Friday, the Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon will have a new thermal power plant for the production of hot, chilled and sanitary hot water, powered by 200 square meters of solar panels.
“With a solar system on the roof of the building, with 200 square meters of solar panels installed and 30 kilometers of pipes, the Santa Maria thermal power plant is one of the strategic axes of the Green Hospital project,” the hospital’s management said in a statement. The statement said that the local Santa Maria health facility is the most energy efficient in the Lisbon region.
The Green Hospital project was launched in 2018 and the measures taken have, according to the statement, reduced carbon dioxide emissions by more than four thousand tons, reduced energy consumption by about 30% and saved almost a million euros on the electricity bill last year.
The “green hospital” project includes, among other things, the installation of three photovoltaic parks with a total area of 12 thousand square meters, the use of solar water heating systems, the replacement of traditional lamps with LED ones, the installation of aluminum frames with cut thermal insulation in windows and doorways, as well as the creation of a consumption control system.
The hospital also installed motion sensors to illuminate less-used areas, as well as faucets and low-flow lights, among other measures.
In 2019, the hospital consumed only non-renewable energy, but by the end of 2023, nearly half of its energy came from renewable sources.
