Russia will take retaliatory measures against journalists from Spain, France and Belgium for illegally entering its territory, in the Kursk region, the site of a Ukrainian military operation, Russian diplomatic spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Friday.
“We have seen the cases of Italian and North American journalists. Unfortunately, they were caught doing this [entrar em território russo] journalists from other countries: Spain, France, Belgium,” Zakharova told the press on the sidelines of the youth forum.
Russia has already opened criminal cases against an American journalist (CNN) and two Italians (RAI public television) for illegally crossing the border to cover the Ukrainian Armed Forces offensive in the Russian border region of Kursk.
“Now our people, including diplomats and experts dealing with this issue, are identifying so-called Western journalists who have crossed our country’s border without permission,” Zakharova emphasized.
The representative also added that the journalists did not have visas or residence permits in the country, and they were not accredited by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which is mandatory for conducting journalistic work in Russia.
“Now the bodies responsible for implementing the law are identifying the relevant facts, on the basis of which appropriate decisions will be made,” he said.
Russia, which blocked access to the websites of 81 European media outlets in June, has summoned the Italian ambassador and the US charge d’affaires in Moscow in recent days to protest the behaviour of its countries’ journalists.
