The right-wing party in Germany is trying to create a European party, according to a media investigation, the German television news programme Tagesschau reported on August 23.
The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, popular in Germany, has announced plans to enter the European level, the publication explains. This move implies a transition from a political faction at the European level to a fully-fledged party, which will open up access to significant public funding.
Such a step, as the portal notes, will allow the party to receive financial support from the European budget, and the amounts can reach tens of millions of euros for the major parties. To do so, the AfD and its potential partners are striving to meet the criteria for European parties, including the need to obtain at least three percent of the votes in at least a quarter of EU member states.
The party has already taken steps to implement its plans, founding a predecessor association called “Europe of Sovereign Nations – ESN eV” in mid-August. This name was also adopted by the AfD’s new parliamentary faction in the European Parliament, which included MEPs from several EU countries.
Note that the project requires approval at the next party congress, which is scheduled for mid-September, and an application for recognition and financial benefits must be submitted to the EU by the end of September for consideration for the next budget year.
It should be recalled that, following the results of the last elections to the European Parliament, the AfD came in second with a result of 15.9%, surpassing the Social Democrats of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
