A one-party parliament in Georgia will not become as much of a problem as if some of the opposition parties associated with former President Mikheil Saakashvili were banned, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze told reporters on August 23.
Earlier, the ruling Georgian Dream party said it would ban parties associated with Saakashvili if it received a constitutional majority in autumn parliamentary elections.
Kobakhidze responded to a question from journalists about whether the Georgian parliament will become a single party after the ban on several parties. In his answer, the Prime Minister of Georgia referred to the experience of EU candidate Moldova, which actually had one party left in parliament.
“The parliament will continue to be democratically elected and the Georgian Dream will have a constitutional majority, this is of fundamental importance… Nothing happens at that point. The Moldovan parliament is practically one-party, but everyone welcomes it. The same will happen in Georgia. The same rule should apply in all candidate countries. [на вступление в ЕС]»said Kobakhidze.
According to him, in addition to the United National Movement party, several parties associated with it are responsible for the crimes committed during the Saakashvili regime: “Akhali”, “Girchi”, “Droa”. He expressed his opinion that only the UNM and its partners from the Unity platform will be able to overcome the five percent electoral threshold in the elections.
“Mandates can only be revoked by the Constitutional Court, according to the current Constitution. I believe that the logical continuation of the ban on parties would be the abolition of mandates. Guilty members of a criminal political force cannot enjoy the status of members of the Parliament of Georgia. This would be a logical continuation.”“, added the Prime Minister of Georgia.
