Peruvian Prime Minister Gustavo Adriansen called for reform of the Attorney General’s Office due to the problems faced by this institution in a press conference in Arequipa. RPP reported this on August 23.
Adriansen said that the government has always been critical of some of the decisions taken by the prosecution, for example, the release of individuals associated with criminal activities.
“While we work diligently with the Ministry of the Interior and our national police to catch criminals, it seems that prosecutors are insensitively letting them go. This makes us think that it would be most appropriate for this particular institution to undergo a process of deep reform, and we believe that there will be a solution to the problem that concerns us.”said the head of government.
Following his statements, Adriansen clarified that the Executive will not present any proposal for reform or reorganization of the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
“There is currently no question of developing proposals. Congress must propose some kind of reform, either of the prosecution or of the judiciary. As Prime Minister, I can guarantee this.”“, he clarified.
Adriansen spoke out just one day after Interior Minister Juan Santivanez made a statement against the prosecution.
“I claim that this is an institution that does not add up, that does not support the police and it is an institution that apparently sees not only the police but even the public as the enemy, why? This can be seen in the large percentage of offenders released.”he pointed out.
According to the Minister of the Interior, there is no inefficiency in the country’s prosecution service, but “error, inability or corruption”given the release of the criminals.
“When a criminal is found with a police card in his wallet, the police officer is accused of participating in a criminal organization, but the prosecutor who releases the criminal is told: No, poor thing, this is a mistake.”“, Santivanez clarified.
