Fishmeal production at IFFO member organisations increased by 40% and fish oil production by 10% in the first six months of the year, The Fish reported on 23 August.
Production is estimated based on participants from Peru, Chile, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, the United States, Spain and some African countries. Growth was driven by higher catches in northern Peru.
IFFO points out that fishing is currently prohibited in the region. Only the southern part of Peruvian waters is open to fishing, where only 15% of the quota is caught.
In Chile, production in the first 6 months of 2024 decreased in the south and increased in the north of the country. In Northern Europe, raw material volumes are expected to fall due to a decrease in quotas in 2024 compared to 2023. In the United States, menhaden catches are increasing but remain below 2023 levels.
In China, the fishing ban was lifted in mid-August. Producers of fishmeal and fish oil remain cautious and do not provide production forecasts for 2024.
China’s official statistics expect fishmeal and fish oil imports to decline due to weak demand for aquafeed and high production costs. The pig industry, which used to consume significant amounts of fishmeal, continues to recover and pork prices have risen in recent months.
