Human Rights Watch (HRW) this Saturday expressed concern about the possible enforced disappearance of political prisoner Andrei Pivovarov, a former director of the public organization Open Russia, calling for the activist’s unconditional release.
“Russian authorities refused to provide information about the whereabouts of political prisoner Andrei Pivovarov for a month, raising fears that he had forcibly disappeared,” HRW said in a statement.
According to the note, Pivovarov’s family and lawyer last heard from the activist on January 18, when they were told by letter that he would be “transferred from a prison in St. Petersburg to a strict regime colony.”
