Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed “deep alarm” over the “heinous attack” in Solingen, Germany, and sent a message of solidarity to the German people.
In an official note released late on Saturday, Marcelo wrote that “at a festival that celebrates diversity, there can be no place for hatred or violence against innocent civilians.”
The President of the Republic also expresses his “deep condolences to the families of the victims, wishes a speedy recovery to the wounded and sends a message of sincere solidarity to the German people.”
The knife attack, which left three people dead and eight injured, took place on Friday at 9:45 pm local time (8:45 pm Lisbon) in the historic centre of Solingen, close to one of the stages where the Diversity Festival concert was taking place.
After randomly injuring several people, the attacker managed to escape despite the ensuing chaos.
According to local police, the main suspect in the attack, a 26-year-old man, surrendered to authorities and confessed to the crime.
The fundamentalist group Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the attack.
