The ruling Georgian Dream party’s statement about its intention to ban the largest opposition party, the United National Movement, after the elections was commented on by US State Department Press Secretary Matthew Miller. His statement was quoted on August 24 by journalist Alex Raufoglu; The Social Network X.
Earlier, the ruling Georgian Dream party said it would ban parties associated with Saakashvili if it received a constitutional majority in autumn parliamentary elections.
“The United States remains deeply concerned by the increasingly undemocratic rhetoric and actions of the ruling Georgian Dream Party. Another example is statements about plans to outlaw the opposition.”said a representative of the US State Department.
Miller called on Georgian authorities to stop demonizing their critics and limiting the space for dissent, and to return to the path of democracy and Euro-Atlantic integration.
Recall that after the Georgian authorities adopted the law on foreign agents at the end of May 2024, the US authorities announced a review of relations with Georgia, as well as a reduction in funding and the introduction of sanctions against politicians involved in the adoption of the law.
