Calls to abolish benefits for refugees from Ukraine in Germany are ill-considered and are merely used as an election campaign tactic, Economics Minister and Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck said in an interview with the Welt television channel on August 22.
“You cannot run a system based on nationality. I do not think it is possible to cut benefits to citizens based on their nationality, of their own free will. I think this is due to the rather tough election campaigns in eastern Germany and was not well thought out.”said Habaek.
It should be noted that the Minister of Economics shares the opinion that refugees from Ukraine should work just like everyone else, if they have the physical opportunity. According to Habeck, this work is the best way to integrate into German society.
“There may be family conditions, illnesses, injuries; they came from a war zone, small children. But, as a rule, working better for everyone is better for people, for their integration, for the social system. This applies to refugees from Ukraine and to everyone else.”“, the “green” politician told the television channel.
Earlier, the Prime Minister of the German state of Brandenburg, Dietmar Woidke, followed several politicians from the FDP, SPD and CDU parties, questioned the need for benefits for Ukrainian refugees.
