The UN mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said on Sunday that a new Taliban law that forces women to cover their faces with veils and bans them from speaking in public reflects a “bleak vision of the future”.
In a statement, the UN body said it was concerned about the adoption of “a new morality law that imposes sweeping restrictions on personal conduct and gives the morality police enormous powers.”
The Taliban took control of Afghanistan in August 2021 and on Thursday included in the Law for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice many of the restrictions they had advocated, such as the mandatory hijab for women and a ban on men, who are forced to grow beards.
