A sharp rise in the number of unneutered cats has led to overcrowding in shelters across Germany, the German Animal Welfare Union reported on August 23, Welt reported.
The journalist explained that German animal shelters were unable to cope with the flood of kittens caused by the mass reproduction of unneutered cats. With the cost of veterinary services skyrocketing, many owners are deciding to take their cats outside, causing the number of stray cats to reach a critical level.
“Shelters are overcrowded and at capacity. We also receive requests every day from cat owners who want to get rid of their animal.”The president of the German Animal Welfare Union said. Reports from various parts of Germany indicate that the situation with abandoned and found kittens continues to worsen every week.
The German Animal Welfare Union is calling on lawmakers to take measures to control the cat population, including mandatory sterilisation of stray cats, the publication adds. Representatives of the organisation stress that without changes to the legislation, the fight against this problem will be endless.
It is also noted that the cost of veterinary services has played a major role in the current crisis. Following the rise in sterilization prices, many cat owners were faced with a choice that in most cases resulted in abandoning the animal.
In the current situation, activists and shelter workers are trying hard to find solutions, but without government help and changes in legislation, their efforts may be in vain, the journalist added.
