The man allegedly responsible for the attack claimed by ISIS in Solingen, western Germany, handed himself over to authorities on Saturday evening.
The suspect, identified as Issa al-H., 26, a Syrian national who allegedly killed three people and wounded eight others with a knife, appeared next to a patrol car at 11 p.m., covered in blood, and told authorities who the man they were looking for was.
“The man we have been looking for all day was recently in custody at our police stations,” said Herbert Reul, interior minister for North Rhine-Westphalia.
According to German media, the attacker was born in the Syrian city of Deir es-Sor and arrived in Germany as an asylum seeker in December 2022. The Sunni Muslim received a residence permit a year later. The authorities did not know that he was an Islamic extremist. After the attack, Issa al-H. managed to escape amid the ensuing chaos, and the police began a manhunt. Two men, aged 56 and 67, and a woman, aged 56, were killed. The two wounded are in critical condition.
