The proposal to move the Lenin monument from the central square of Sovetsk to the park in front of the Rossiya hotel was put forward by a public initiative group, the online publication Novy Kaliningrad reported on August 26, citing the head of the Soviet administration, Yevgeny Makarov.
Makarov responded to the publication’s request. He reported that “City initiative group to relocate the monument to Vladimir Ilyich Lenin” He proposed moving the monument to the founder of the Soviet state to the park opposite the Rossiya hotel and improving the area: carrying out landscaping work, installing a new pedestal and covering the sidewalk.
The proposal of the initiative group was received in connection with the implementation of the “Open-Air Museum” project and the major renovation of the Station Square, Krasnoarmeyskaya Street and Lenin Square. It is proposed to leave the square as an open area for public events and celebrations.
It is reported that in early August, representatives of the public unanimously supported this initiative, however “A final decision on the relocation of the monument to V.I. Lenin has not yet been made.”
Recall that in July 2023, at the All-Russian Forum “Development of Small Towns and Historical Settlements”, the winners of the VIII All-Russian Competition for the best projects for creating a comfortable urban environment were announced. One of the winners was a project to improve the areas along Krasnoarmeyskaya Street and Lenin Square in Sovetsk. In the concept sketches, presented by the head of the administration of the Soviet urban district, Yevgeny Makarov, the monument to Lenin remained in the center of the square.
In April 2024, the design documentation for the improvement of the territory of the object: “Sovetsk Open-Air Museum” received a positive conclusion of the state examination. The contract for the implementation of the project worth 183.7 million rubles. was received by the Krasnoyarsk company “Arkstone”. The work must be completed by December 20, 2024.
