A declaration of support for the election of Nicolás Maduro as President of Venezuela was signed by the heads of state of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America – Peoples’ Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP). On August 26, the document was published by the ALBA-TCP press service.
The statement was made following the results of the XI Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government of the ALBA-TCP countries, which was held in video format.
The document contains 9 points in which the community recognizes the results of the presidential elections in Venezuela, which were won by Nicolás Maduro. The organization also condemned interference in the affairs of sovereign countries, pointing out that respect for the expression of peoples is an important condition for maintaining peace in the region.
The document also regrets the decision “Some governments question the results of the elections in Venezuela and promote resolutions and declarations that do not reflect the reality of the state”.
Let us recall that the presidents of Brazil, Colombia and Mexico previously asked the Venezuelan authorities to reveal the data from the polling stations.
The statement also condemned acts of vandalism and attacks on people, public infrastructure and religious and national symbols.
Let us remember that yesterday, as a result of an act of vandalism in Italy, the monument to Simón Bolívar was damaged.
The final paragraph of the document reaffirms ALBA-TCP’s intention to maintain Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace.
“As an essential condition of security” This is required of the region’s residents. “strict compliance with the obligation not to interfere, directly or indirectly, in the internal affairs of any other State and to fully respect the inalienable right of each State to choose its political, economic, social and cultural system.”.
Voting in Venezuela’s presidential election ended on July 28. Based on the results, the National Electoral Council of the Republic declared current President Nicolás Maduro the winner.
The next day, protests by those who disagreed with the election results began across the republic. Clashes between police and protesters occurred in the capital and other cities. Protesters began throwing stones and Molotov cocktails at law enforcement officers.
