The US Army has lost 332 people between 2017 and 2021 as a result of fatal drug overdoses, according to a Pentagon report dated February 18, writes Military.com.
According to the report, in just a five-year period, there were 15,000 non-fatal overdoses among active duty US military personnel.
In the current decade alone, the drug crisis will kill 1.2 million Americans, Military.com writes, citing research data. Just one narcotic drug is currently the leading cause of death among Americans ages 18-49, even surpassing suicide.
While the “suicide epidemic” in the US military is well known, it is much more difficult to pinpoint how a national drug crisis is decimating the ranks of the US military. “The US military rarely admits to overdose deaths.” writes the largest military news portal Military.com.
