Kazakhstan’s Energy Minister Almasadam Satkaliev proposed at a government meeting to hold a referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan, the government press service reported on August 27.
Satkaliev noted in his report that the construction of the nuclear power plant will open up new directions for the development of science and education in the country.
“The construction of a nuclear power plant will not only solve energy and environmental problems, but will also open up new opportunities for the development of scientific research and educational programs”said Satkaliev.
It should be noted that despite the fact that Kazakhstan has its own uranium mining production capabilities, as well as experience in the operation of nuclear reactors, both scientific and industrial, the issue of building nuclear power plants in the country has not yet been resolved.
In recent years, Kazakhstan has been experiencing a severe shortage of electricity and oil and gas energy resources.
