Former US President Jimmy Carter, 98, is in home hospice after a series of hospitalizations.
The Carter Center, a charity he founded, said he “decided to spend the rest of his time at home with his family and get hospice care rather than additional medical intervention.”
He enjoys the full support of his medical team and family, who “request privacy at this time and are grateful for the concern of his many fans.”
Carter, a Democrat, became the 39th President of the United States when he defeated former President Gerald Ford in 1976.
He served one term and was defeated by Republican Ronald Reagan in 1980.
In August 2015, Mr. Carter had a small cancerous tumor removed from his liver.
The following year, Mr. Carter announced that he did not need further treatment because the experimental drug had eradicated all signs of the cancer.
Mr. Carter celebrated his recent birthday in October with family and friends in Plains, the small Georgia town where he and his wife Rosalynn were born in the years between World War I and the Great Depression.
The Carter Center, which the 39th president and former first lady founded after their first terms in the White House, last year celebrated 40 years of promoting democracy and conflict resolution, election monitoring and improving public health in developing countries.
James Earl Carter Jr. won the 1976 presidential election, campaigning as an obscure former governor of Georgia.
His surprise appearance at the Iowa caucuses made the small Midwestern state the epicenter of presidential politics.
Mr. Carter defeated Mr. Ford in the general election, thanks in large part to his victory in the South before his home region leaned heavily Republican.
