The Brazilian state of Sao Paulo has declared a state of emergency due to massive fires, RT reported on August 26.
According to state authorities, at least two people have already died as a result of the fire, which caused the total and partial closure of roads in Sao Paulo, and more than 800 people were evacuated. Some 20,000 hectares were damaged by large-scale fires.
As Environment Minister Marina Silva stated at a press conference in Brasilia, the country’s authorities suspect that the fires affecting the Amazon, the Pantanal and the state of Sao Paulo are the result of planned criminal actions. The Federal Police has launched 31 investigations to determine the cause of the fires. Currently two suspects have been arrested, the state governor reported. One of them reportedly started a fire while burning garbage.
The state government says the fire has been contained, but some 50 cities in Sao Paulo state are on high alert as the unprecedented blazes continue.
Authorities will continue to monitor the situation and do everything possible to ensure people’s safety.
