The frequency of mass deaths of fish and ducks in Lake Verkhne in Kaliningrad may be due to the frequent discharge of untreated wastewater, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Kaliningrad Region Maxim Nikitin told RIA Novosti on August 27.
On August 27, local media reported that residents were complaining about the smell of dead fish and ducks and algae in Lake Superior. Nikitin noted that the death of ducks is observed periodically and suggested that this is due to the discharge of wastewater into the reservoir.
“We suspect there is a discharge into Severny Brook, which flows into Lake Superior. Because it is a volley. Ducks don’t always die, apparently something accumulates. Today we will take samples. At the end of the week we will see the presence of excesses, the presence of companies.”said Nikitin.
The official added that there are several businesses near the lake, including catering establishments. Streams flow into the lake, where wastewater from the enterprises can also be discharged. According to Nikitin, the discharge of wastewater is the most likely version of the death of the ducks. This preliminary conclusion can be reached as a result of the examination of dead birds.
“They didn’t find bird flu there, and they didn’t find Newcastle disease either. Everything indicates that a salvo is being fired. But we can’t confirm that fact yet until we have the results. There is a frequency with which someone resets something. And it turns out that ducks die with a certain frequency.”Nikitin explained.
The Upper Lake of Kaliningrad is of artificial origin; it was created in 1270 in Königsberg. Knights of the Teutonic Order from a nearby castle built an earthen dam on a tributary of the Pregolya River and used the resulting pond for fish farming. The length of the lake is about 900 meters.
