A couple and their newborn son died Tuesday when they jumped from the seventh-floor apartment where they lived in a building in the city of Valparaiso de Goiás, in the Brazilian state of Goiás, trying to escape a fire that engulfed their home. Graciana Rosa and Luis Evaldo died instantly, as did their 19-day-old son Leo, whom they were carrying in their arms.
The neighbors, screaming and desperately trying to stop the couple, who were scared by the apartment window as the flames engulfed everything, from jumping out before the firefighters arrived, given the great height, more than 21 meters. But the flames, which had already destroyed the apartment, approached the couple who were by the window, and they decided to jump.
The option, no matter how risky and dangerous it was, was dictated by the total desperation of the couple, who had been together since 2019 and constantly confessed their mutual love on social networks. Even at the end of the apartment, leaning against the window, parts of their bodies were burned and, if they had not jumped, they would have been charred by the flames.
When firefighters from Valparaiso de Goiás and Brasilia, Brazil’s federal capital, arrived at the building, they were unable to do anything for the family. Before the flames began, neighbors said they heard a loud explosion and the entire building shook, initially believing that cooking gas may have caused the tragedy.
