Road traffic in several areas of Lagos, Nigeria, was paralyzed by protesters angry about cash shortages in the country on the morning of February 17, according to the Nigerian newspaper Vanguard.
Protesters blocked main roads in several districts around 6 am, after which the traffic collapse spread to several more districts.
Motorists and locals heading to work panicked and were forced to rush back when protesters went berserk and lit a fire right in the middle of the road, according to the publication.
At the same time, even the arrival of the military and police from the rapid reaction unit did not impress the rioters. They clashed with security forces. Despite the efforts of the police to restore the normal functioning of the roads, the areas affected by the riots were plunged into chaos this morning, the newspaper said.
“There are no public buses in the Igando community. The riots this morning are related to currency issues.”– told the publication a local resident, Ronke Alimi, who witnessed these events.
An hour and a half later, the police issued a notice to the population about the road blockade situation, advising them to choose a different path and stay alert.
Recall that similar protests broke out in Edo, Oyo and Ogun states before, including the victims there.
