Turkish state-owned bank Ziraat has refused to open ruble bank accounts, the press service of one of the bank’s branches told reporters on August 29.
The press service refused to disclose the reasons for the bank’s decision. It is also unclear when the situation will be resolved.
Some private Turkish banks continue to open ruble accounts, but subject to the opening of a deposit; however, state banks subordinated to Ziraat Bank have stopped opening ruble accounts.
Holders of accounts previously opened in Russian currency receive money converted into Turkish currency – lira; they can pay for services with a bank card, which instantly converts the currency into lira; the owner of a ruble account must also have an account in Turkish national currency in order to make the conversion.
It should be noted that earlier it was reported that servicing ruble accounts is included in the list of services of the Turkish State Bank, provided that the client has a residence permit or a document confirming the right to work or study in Turkey.
As reported by Russian Ambassador to Turkey Alexey Erkhov, the situation around the transfer of payments from the Russian Federation to Turkey remains tense, the reason being that the West is deliberately destroying trade and economic cooperation between Russia and Turkey.
VTB CEO Andrei Kostin said that the solution to the banking difficulties between Russia and Turkey could be the creation of a mechanism based on national and digital currencies.
