The Ugandan Armed Forces have handed over 34 Congolese they rescued from ADF rebels to their homeland, Anadolu Agency reported on February 19.
Ugandan Army Lt. Kayanja Muhanga said the group, made up mainly of women and children, was kidnapped by rebels in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) and taken into the forest to be trained in the use of Firearms.
Muhanga said the group was rescued by Ugandan troops taking part in a joint operation with Congolese forces to eliminate ADF rebels in eastern Congo.
“We rescued 34 people from the ADF rebels. They were flown from there by helicopter because there are no roads in the forests.”he told reporters.
Recall that the ADF rebels came from Uganda in the 1990s with the intention of overthrowing President Yoweri Museveni.
The Ugandan and DR Congo militaries launched a joint operation against the rebels in December 2021.
