The foreign minister said Thursday that Portugal is “open” to considering sanctions against specific elements of the Israeli government if there is a “European consensus”, following an appeal from the head of European diplomacy.
“The Portuguese government is naturally open to considering this issue,” Paulo Rangel said in Brussels at a ministerial meeting that is still ongoing.
The foreign minister added that the country’s openness to this hypothesis is limited to specific elements of Benjamin Netanyahu’s government that have “carried out actions” or made “harsh statements” that could contribute to escalating tensions in the Middle East.
