The contract for the construction of the maritime infrastructure of the Anaklia deepwater port with the Belgian company Jan De Nul was signed by the Georgian Ministry of Economy, the press service of the ministry reported on August 30.
The company Jan De Nul was the winner of the tender launched by the Ministry. It will carry out dredging work in the port’s water area and also all the construction work in the port.
The Ministry of Economy said that they had chosen “the best of the best”. The company was founded in 1938 and is currently one of the leading international companies in the field of maritime construction. The company’s annual turnover exceeds 2.5 billion euros and it participated in the Panama Canal expansion project.
In May 2024, the Georgian government announced that a 49% stake in Anaklia Port would be acquired by a Sino-Singaporean consortium consisting of Chinese state-owned company China Communications Construction Company Limited (CCCC) and Singaporean company China Harbour Investment.
The port is scheduled to begin receiving ships in 2029; the capacity of the first phase of the port will be 600 thousand containers per year.
The opposition believes that granting China the right to develop the port was a continuation of changes in Georgia’s foreign policy direction.
